In dawn’s cold silence, still we lie.
A gulf between us, ten miles wide
Alone, we two, in the grey light,
Locked together for all time.
What is done, is done to death
And what’s been said is what’s been said.
The smoke clears and the wounds are dressed,
The lines are drawn again, entrenched.
The pattern’s set,
The wheels grind on,
The ruts wear grooves into the bone.
We play our parts
And shoulder arms
With shrapnel in our hearts,
We’re battle-scarred.
Walled up in these living cells,
The children we were once: are still.
Branded by the white, hot fire
Of pain, familiar, alien.
Seared beyond the skin, the scars
Seeping poison to the heart,
Ineradicable hurt
That taints our response to the world.
The pattern’s set,
The wheels grind on,
The ruts wear grooves into the bone.
We play our parts
And shoulder arms
With shrapnel in our hearts,
We’re battle-scarred.
The ghosts that stalk and haunt our lives,
The buried “us” from former times,
The cowering child with tear-tracked face,
It cripples us with confused rage.
The walls we raise to keep us safe,
The minefields laid that hem us in,
The cold, steel armour of our life
Is what prevents us living it.
The pattern’s set,
The wheels grind on,
The ruts wear grooves into the bone.
We play our parts
And shoulder arms
With shrapnel in our hearts,
We’re battle-scarred.
